Uncertainty: Insights for Entrepreneurs

Lessons from the Entrepreneurial Journey

This morning, I sat at Halifax airport with an orange juice and a breakfast burrito, staring out at the runway. Today marks the start of a 5-week journey through Europe and Africa with my dad—a trip I’ve been preparing for, but not really. It’s hitting me now: the road ahead is full of unknowns, much like the entrepreneurial path I’ve been walking.

Uncertainty is part of the job description for entrepreneurs. We live with it, make decisions despite it, and sometimes even thrive because of it. But the toll it takes is real, and handling it requires more than grit—it requires strategy, self-awareness, and the right support.

The Cost of Uncertainty

Entrepreneurs are no strangers to uncertainty. The Startup Snapshot Report highlights how this constant unknown impacts mental health:

  • 72% of founders report mental health challenges, with anxiety and stress as common companions.
  • 44% experience high stress, while 37% face burnout—often a byproduct of navigating problems without clear answers.

For me, uncertainty shows up in every corner of life. It’s the financial unpredictability of entrepreneurship, the challenges of managing clients and team members, and the emotional weight of not knowing what’s next.

Why Uncertainty Feels So Heavy

Uncertainty isn’t just about not having answers; it’s about how it magnifies our emotions. It brings self-doubt, fleeting confidence, and a constant battle between action and overthinking.

Entrepreneurs must solve problems quickly, often without all the information. This requires a delicate balance:

  • Confidence to move forward despite incomplete data.
  • Rational thinking to avoid rash decisions.
  • Empathy to support others—team members, clients, or partners—who may not handle uncertainty as well as you.

At times, this weight can feel overwhelming. For me, it manifests as a persistent ball of nerves in my gut, a daily challenge to manage while still showing up as a leader.

Creating Space for Uncertainty

One of the most difficult aspects of uncertainty is sharing it. As entrepreneurs, we often carry this burden alone, fearing that sharing it will make us seem weak or unprepared. Yet, we need to find spaces where we can open up without judgment.

  • Choose the Right Audience: Not everyone can handle uncertainty in the same way. Share with those who understand the entrepreneurial journey or are equipped to offer meaningful support.
  • Avoid Fix-It Conversations: When we share challenges, we’re not always looking for solutions. Sometimes, we just need someone to listen.
  • Build Trust and Faith: Accept that not everything will be clear. Trust the process, your team, and your ability to navigate the unknown.

Lessons from the Journey

As I embark on this trip with my dad, I can’t help but draw parallels between the road ahead and the entrepreneurial path. Both are filled with unknowns, risks, and the need for adaptability.

Here’s what I’m taking with me:

  • Accept the Unknown: Not everything needs to be understood. Sometimes, faith and forward motion are enough.
  • Lean Into Support: Share your struggles with the right people—whether peers, mentors, or friends who “get it.”
  • Give Yourself Grace: You’re not meant to have all the answers. The journey is as much about learning as it is about building.

A Call to Connection

Entrepreneurship is exhilarating, but it can also be isolating. The uncertainty we navigate is emotionally taxing, and loneliness only compounds the challenge.

I want to hear from you: How are you handling the uncertainties in your entrepreneurial journey? What strategies have worked for you when facing the unknown?

Let’s share, learn, and grow together. Because at the end of the day, no entrepreneur should feel like they’re facing the storm alone.
